Biodiversity isn't just a scientific concern, it's an economic and societal one too. This work package steps back from the lab bench to ask a bigger question: what is biodiversity science actually worth to society, and how can it translate into real-world value, new products, data services, even entirely new environmental markets? Because economies both shape and depend on the natural world, understanding this two-way relationship helps decision-makers respond with evidence rather than guesswork, rather than assumption or intuition alone.
The results will be brought together in joint publications exploring how biodiversity monitoring, ecology, and society can better reinforce one another under the theme of future-proofing blue-green monitoring through synergy. Building on existing partnerships at Trier University, including the "Value of Nature" project, this work package helps embed biodiversity thinking into legal, economic, and policy systems, turning scientific advances into lasting frameworks, tools, and public awareness that outlast the project itself.
Bringing together ecology, law, governance, and economics, this WP looks at biodiversity across every scale, from individual genes to whole ecosystems, drawing on the analytical tools developed elsewhere in BEAM. Regular workshops bring natural and social scientists into direct dialogue, ensuring that scientific insight and societal need actually inform one another rather than developing separately. This exchange is complemented by science communication, analysis of patent trends, and active engagement with policymakers, making sure findings reach the people best placed to act on them.
